Florida school scrapping textbooks and rolling out iPads to its students
Lake Minneola High School has adopted the iPad as its future learning device of choice. When students return next month they will have access to a shiny new iPad for school time and home use. Lake Minneola will be the first public school in Central Florida to buy Apples iconic tablet for all of its students.
“Students learn differently now because of the technology,” said Kathy Halbig, innovative learning manager for the Lake school district who is overseeing the project. “Students are used to having multiple sources and being able to have more social collaboration in their learning process rather than just doing it sitting quietly and reading.” “Rather than have a child have five tools on his or her desk they’ve got one tool that will function as the textbook, the Slate, the Internet access, note taker, calendar,” she said.
The school has invested around $700,000 buying up 1750 iPads for its students. Teachers are already planning lessons using the iPad as the focal point complete with selected educational apps. The school believes that it will save them money in the long term.
The iPads will be locked down to prevent students installing apps that are not appropriate to the school learning process. Each iPad will also be supplied with a rugged case to protect it from everyday school life.

Swisscom claims that it has got this information when it contacted apple regarding iPhone 5 distribution, The tipster told them that the iPhone 5 will be launched in the U.S. on September 5th, and then will be world wide a month later
Swisscom, is a trustful Source cause its Apple’s partner in distribution and it has offered before iPhone 4, iPhone 3 GS
But McAdam, the new CEO for Verizon Wireless, suggested in a conference call with analysts today that the next iPhone should come out this Fall:
- We are probably what I would view as maybe a quarter behind what we had talked about in January, primarily because we expected an iPhone 5 refresh sometime this summer. We don’t know when the next one is going to come out. You will have to ask Apple that, but we expect that probably sometime in the fall, and I think you will see a significant jump there when we get to that point.
If Verizon’s CEO doesn’t know when Apple will launch their next smartphone, how would a Swisscom executive come by that information?
what do you guys think?
New Apple Technology Stops iPhones From Filming Live Events
CUPERTINO, Calif. — Fans at concerts and sports games may soon be stopped from using their iPhones to film the action — as a result of new technology being considered by Apple, The Times of London reported Thursday.
The California company has plans to build a system that will sense when a person is trying to film a live event using a cell phone and automatically switch off their camera.
A patent application filed by Apple, and obtained by the Times, reveals how the software would work. If a person were to hold up their iPhone, the device would trigger the attention of infra-red sensors installed at the venue. These sensors would then instruct the iPhone to disable its camera.
Other features, such as the phone’s ability to make a call or send text messages, would not be affected.
The software is seen as an attempt to protect the interests of event organizers and television broadcasters who have exclusive rights to film an event. These companies often sell their own recordings but are frustrated when cell phone videos appear online via websites such as YouTube, allowing people to watch the concert free.
The concept may also allow Apple to reach more favorable terms with record labels when negotiating deals to sell content though its iTunes online store.
Apple filed its patent application with U.S. authorities 18 months ago, but details only became available this month. It is not clear if Apple intends to develop the concept into a working system, and if so, whether it will be implemented within the company’s devices. The latest version of iPhone is expected in September.
